But the contract has been torn up. We have entered the age of "Zero-Click Search."
THE HARVEST
With the integration of AI into search engines, the goal is no longer to lead a user to a source of information, but to synthesize that information and present it as a final answer. The search engine has become a curtain. It harvests the knowledge from independent sites, presents it in a neat summary, and ensures the user never has to actually visit the original page.
We are producing the raw material for AI models, but we are no longer receiving the visibility that used to be the reward. This is more than an economic shift; it is a cognitive one. We have become curators of a library that only the machine is allowed to read.
THE COGNITIVE RENT
This brings us to a stark reality. Most of us start our journey by renting a digital plot of land from a commercial webhost. We are lured in by promotional deals, paying a small monthly fee for the privilege of existing on their infrastructure.
But this is not a service; it is a hook. Once we have spent years building a presence and an identity on their servers, we find ourselves paying a premium to maintain a site that has been effectively hidden from the world by the very algorithms we once served.
To continue paying these fees is to accept a form of digital serfdom. We are paying rent on a plot of land while the landlord allows the surrounding roads to be demolished, leaving us stranded in an expensive silence.
THE LOGIC OF THE LAB
This is why I have chosen to move toward self-hosting and the Darknet. When the search engine stops being an honest broker, the economic justification for commercial hosting vanishes.
By running my site on a local machine and distributing it through sovereign channels, I am no longer a tenant in someone else's empire. I do not care about SEO because the algorithm is no longer a tool for discovery; it is a tool for extraction.
A NEW KINETIC WEB
I envision a different way forward: a return to the original spirit of the web as a decentralized network of trust. Instead of begging for visibility from a central authority, we should build circles of mutual recognition.

THE END OF THE LEASE
The era of the commercial host is ending, not because the technology failed, but because the relationship did. The trust is gone. We were promised visibility in exchange for content; we received obscurity in exchange for rent.
